During this ride, water is never far away.
We cycle from lakes and ponds to rivers, canals, and other waterways.
As we depart from Vlaardingen, we first see the water in the form of harbors. In Rotterdam, we ride along the Nieuwe Maas, and soon after, we circle the Kralingse Plas. We then continue to the river Rotte, the Bergsche Voorplas, and the Zevenhuizerplas. At the Rottemeren and the Willem-Alexander rowing course, we leave the water behind for a while. Our next stop is the Reeuwijkse Plassen, where we cycle along paths surrounded by water on both sides.
Next, we encounter the small river Oude Rijn and a stretch of the Grecht, before crossing over to the peat river Meije. In this water-rich area, we pass the lakes of the Nieuwkoopse Plassen. Before we head to the equally famous other lakes, we first pass through the De Groene Jonker nature reserve. Then, we cross the Kromme Mijdrecht via a bicycle bridge.
After passing Waterveen, we reach the Vinkeveense Plassen with their elongated islands. We ride to the Grote Wije, and from here, we head west. Through the polder, we arrive at the Amstel-Drecht Canal, which meanders quite a bit for a canal. Just past the halfway point of the ride, we arrive at the Grote Poel of the Westeinderplassen. Next in line are the Geerpolderplas and the Langeraarsche Plassen, soon followed by the Braassemermeer. After some smaller bodies of water, we reach the Kagerplassen.
Now it’s time for some elongated waters in urban areas, such as the river Zijl, the Rhine-Scheldt Canal, and the Vliet. In the Vlietland recreational area, we cycle past Vogelplas Starrevaart and continue to the waters of the Nieuwe Driemanspolder. Via the Trekvliet, we reach the Delftsche Vliet, a very old canal. We leave the canal and later, near Wateringen, swap it for the river Zweth. After a short stretch through Strijp, we reach the Wollebrand recreational lake.
Further on, we cross the Oranje Canal on our way to the Oranjeplassen near Maassluis. We pass this town with the river Scheur on our right, as it is called here between the Nieuwe Maas and the Nieuwe Waterweg. With the finish in sight, we pass the Krabbeplas for one final highlight.
